金属は押し付けるとくっつく！？

金属は他の物質とは違った不思議な特徴があります。今回はそんな不思議な金属の性質について書いていきます。

金属の不思議な性質

中学校で教えるのは金属光沢を持つ、電気を通す、叩くと伸びるの３つです。この特徴は金属が金属結合と呼ばれる結合を持つためにおこります。金属結合は陽イオンの間を自由電子が自由に動いていて、そこに発生するクーロン力（静電気力）で起こります。金属の原子が並ぶだけでこの結合は起こるため、金属を強く押し付けると金属同士がくっつくというのです。前に塩化ナトリウムの劈開の記事を書きました。

塩化ナトリウムはイオン結合なので原子が少しズレただけで原子同士が離れました。その逆ですね。実際にやってみましょう。

釣具屋に売っている鉛の重りを２つ用意します。

鉛の底を金属カッターで削って平らにします。

平らになりました。この作業には錆びていない鉛をだす意味もあります。

鉛のお尻同士をグリグリと押し付けると・・・何やら粘り気を感じてきました。

くっついた〜！

本当にくっつきました。

重い鉛をくっつけるのですから、結構な力です。金属結合のすごさが実感できる実験でした。
